Using photos from my family tree and a timeline of the natural history of our planet, I have placed my ancestors in key turning points of evolution. Patching together actual people and actual events in ways that could never have happened, I re-create a map of human progress. I takes liberties in expanding my family to include plants, animals, and volcanos.

These Paintings are magical spells of safety. The tape structures are both everything I can do, and completely inadequate materials to make a structure. In the beginning, I was just trying to produce a representation of a basic net of safety for people that don’t have the solidity/ safety of a home structure. At some point in my process, the well wishing took the form of fortune cookie type messages that appear in some of the paintings. All of them are prayers to the universe to take care of the people, since we are not doing a very good job of it.

These paintings are inspired by Hawaii, and it’s indomitable nature.
Images of sugar cane factories being usurped by plant life.
Volcanoes building new land even at the cost of established areas.
Even the immense Queen Mary seems doomed when embarking on the wild islands.
I find it refreshing, after a lifetime of regarding land as something very old and already formed to see and think about the planet in continual growth.

These paintings of the Diggins unsettle colonial attitudes that maintain Gold Rush mythologies through the preservation of an extracted landscape and ethnocentric history frozen in time.

For this painting, I used found stencils to create the ravaged landscape of a mining site and hand painted the “man made” structures of the town. Both are abandoned and decaying after being used up.

These paintings are a visual re-cap of my internal and external journey, through 2013-2016.
The Body~ is a snarled traffic jam of energy, getting stuck inside the body, prohibiting the spirit and wings from taking flight. This card has an un-balanced duality of wanting to stay in the snarl, and in wanting to transcend and fly away.

The Woods Mermaid~ is a Magical, mythical figure that is in tune with the natural world. Part sea creature, part mountain goat; She transcends a single reality or power. This card represents the inability to reconcile the magical, creative life with the reality of the physical world.

The Bride~ Locked in an institutional tower, with the only escape back in through a dark tunnel of hidden secrets and heartbreak. This Card has a feeling of trapped between a rock and a hard place. Neither direction feels like the glowing promise of love

Alien-Nation~ a youthful, costumed character with an ethereal, logical, text book idea of a father figure looking over her shoulder from a removed distance. This card is full of isolation, of the restrictions of a muscle and bone body.

The Spirit~ Drawing color, light and magic from the universe and funneling it up and out, through the balanced body. This card is a celebration of growth and learning from all that surrounds us.
